We all lead very busy lives and finding time to prepare meals well in advance is not always possible. Which is why many of us turn to fast food options, or grab something from the processed food aisle.
This can be detrimental to our health over a long period of time and will certainly not assist with weight loss.
We all need a boost during the day to keep our energy levels high and our brains functioning correctly. It’s tempting to reach for a bar of chocolate, snack bar or bag of crisps. But cravings is the body’s way of telling us that it is missing essential nutrients.
The way to keep cravings at bay and keep your body fueled with high energy and slow fat burning foods all day is to prepare advance.
a) Roasted Almonds – Keep a box or a bag of roasted salted almonds in your bag or desk, or close to you. Keeping a tray of fresh roasted almonds in the kitchen will encourage you to snack on them instead of seeking out chocolate or other unhealthy snacks. Take a bag of raw whole almonds and place on a tray. Sprinkle some sea salt over them and roast in a pre-heated oven at 180 – gas mark 4, for 10 minutes, or until they turn a darker shade of brown – but not burnt!
b) Apples – Apples are have a high proportion of fibre and are a low fat snack option, giving you a sweet fix and leaving you feeling full.
c) Nut butter – Nut Butter, such as cashew nut butter, is full of protein and good fats that the body can burn easily. It contains only one ingredient and nothing else. It tastes deliciously naturally sweet and can be spread on a rice cracker or wholemeal cracker, or taken straight from the spoon.
d) Water – Drink plenty of filtered water throughout the day. Keep a glass of water with you at all times. Thirst is often confused with hunger. Sometimes the body is just dehydrated.
